We both had the seal replaced with new improved seals (part of them is leather I am told). Same thing happened to mine at 65,000 and to my buddy's at 72,000. The also want me to consider a slightly smaller pulley. They contend this will remove a tremendous amount of heat from the radiator.
5.9 CUMMINS REAR MAIN SEAL LEAK SIGNS INSTALL
They plan to install a water-cooled trany cooler in a different area and tap into the lower radiator hose. But I will ask the pin question anyway.Ģnd question from Sully, they said putting the tranny cooler in front of the radiator was a mistake Spartan learned from a few years later, when they stopped this type of install. I called a half dozen and asked where they send their Cummins repairs if they can't figure out the problem. Get "rid" of the tranny cooler?.meaning totally get rid of it.or move it? If they mean "get rid of it".I driving my rig to the nearest Cummins dealership!!ġst question, all of the RV dealers in the area send their diesel repair to Colton Truck terminal. If your having problems with a Cummins engine.why arent you taking it to Cummins for repair? IF they do not know THEN.I would worry ALOT about them not knowing what they should about the 5.9 Cummins. IF they don't know about the "KDP".then ask them about the "killer-dowel-pin". No but when I get it to the Colton Truck Terminal I asked they check everything.Īsk them about the " KDP ". HAY havasufun - haveyou had the killer-dowel-pin "issue" corrected/checked ? They said the person who designed my type is a moron. They want to pull it from the front of the radiator and add one that is water cooled in a different area. They said if the cooling system is in order the best fix is to get rid of the tranny cooler. The Banks makes it even more of a problem. They said my Spartan was not designed to run in temps over 95 and no mountains. We also talked about the engine running warm 200 to 220. They will pull the Allison and fix it for $600. When I talked to Colton Truck Terminal they said the early rear mains on the 5.9 were always a problem. I have personally talked to over a dozen 93/94 Vectra owners and while several have mentioned dispensing with the radiator cooler and going to the inline cooler, none ever mentioned having a problem with the rear seal. That procedure was followed by the previous owner and I have continued it. This is also a good reason to run the unit at least once a month for an hour or more to lubricate the seals (among other things). I feel this is another good reason for synthetic trasmission fluid, which runs about 20 degrees cooler than Dino and consequently causes a drop in engine temp as well. I do know that running constantly hot will cause lower end seals to harden and eventually leak. Since ours is an early '94 the previous owner must have taken care of this little problem - hope he changed the seal at the same time. I have the same Vectra/Spartan setup and at 80,000 mi have not had a problem - seal, or overheating but ours does have the lower radiator hose cooler (looks like a small muffler) and it has always run about 185 degrees on a hot day (98 degrees - hot for us). What did you find out on your leak issue?ĩ4 Bounder 36'P Diesel Pusher, Cummins 5.9, Osh Kosh Chassis 89'vette, 98'suburban, 04'aveo so if I were you check the back of the engine for leaks.other the rear main bearing seal. The new cummins engines are now design to run a million miles. Years ago it was common for rear main bearing seals to leak Ford was a great one for rear main bearing seal leaking. You didn't say how many miles you got on the engine ! If you got least than 200,000 miles on it I doubt if your problem is rear main bearing seal. Then I am going boating and I am going to leave it at the Havasu house and drive the toad back to Big Bear. I am going to open a beer and try to put it out of my mind. Cummins engines have some great warranties so check it out. Check your warranty and then get the oil leak fixed before something else takes place. You never said anything about the mileage on your Cummins. Any thoughts? What type is seal is used between the engine and Allison Trans, rope, one piece, rubber?ġ995 63,000 miles not under warranty, engine oil came out of bottom hole on what I would call tne bell housing on the Allison, I can put my finger in the hole and it gets oil soaked.Ģ004 Alfa See Ya Gold 40' 400 ISL, Hummer H3 Toad,Ram 1500 4X4 Quad Cab Toad, 24' Hallmark Cargo Trailer, 20' Carson Toy Hauler when we need the extra room.
